Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the inside of the tooth. At the center of each tooth is the pulp—a tissue consisting of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If this pulp is damaged by caries, trauma, or other factors, painful inflammation can occur. Our goal is to completely remove the inflamed tissue and clean the root canal system. This allows us to stop the inflammation and achieve tooth preservation. Modern Endodontics uses high-precision instruments and enables successful treatment even in complex root structures.
At our modern dentistry practice, we perform root canal treatment when the tooth nerve is irreversibly damaged. Common causes are deep caries that has penetrated the pulp, or trauma from accidents or heavy stress. Leaky fillings can also lead to inflammation of the tooth nerve. Dr. Ann-Cathrin Gottschling uses comprehensive diagnostics to determine whether endodontic treatment is necessary. This involves the use of modern imaging techniques that enable a precise assessment of the tooth structures. Symptoms such as persistent pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, and swelling are typical signs of Pulpitis.

Before the actual root canal treatment, we carry out a thorough examination. X-rays show us the exact anatomy of the root canals. We then administer a local anesthetic to the affected tooth so that the treatment is usually painless.
After the anesthesia, we gain access to the pulp chamber through a small opening in the tooth crown. Using special instruments, we remove the inflamed tissue from all root canals. We then mechanically widen the canals and rinse them thoroughly with disinfectant solutions. This step is crucial for the success of the treatment, as all bacteria must be eliminated. After complete cleaning, we fill the root canals with a biocompatible material and temporarily seal the tooth.
You may experience slight discomfort in the days following root canal treatment. We recommend that you take care of the treated tooth at first. During the follow-up examination, we check the healing process and provide the tooth with a permanent filling or crown.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the tooth nerve is irreversibly damaged. This can be caused by deep caries, trauma, or leaky fillings. Typical symptoms include persistent pain, sensitivity, and swelling. Early treatment significantly improves the chances of success.
Root canal treatment is generally suitable for all patients whose teeth are still worth preserving. The treatment is particularly useful for younger patients, as tooth preservation is the best long-term solution. Endodontics is also often a good option for patients with diabetes or other underlying conditions.
However, this requires that there is sufficient healthy tooth structure and that the tooth can be restored with a prosthesis later on. In cases of severely damaged teeth or unfavorable anatomical conditions, extraction followed by a dental prosthesis may be the better alternative.
We will make the decision together with you after a thorough examination and comprehensive consultation. We take both medical and practical factors into account.
The success rate of modern root canal treatments is around 85-95 percent. We rely on proven endodontic techniques based on the latest scientific findings. Complete cleaning of all root canals and a bacteria-proof filling are crucial for the success of the treatment.
Thanks to modern anesthesia techniques, root canal treatment is usually painless. After the treatment, you may experience temporary mild discomfort, but this can be easily treated with standard painkillers. Our team will provide you with detailed information about aftercare.
Depending on the complexity of the case, one to three sessions are required. In uncomplicated cases, Root canal treatment can often be completed in one session. In cases of severe inflammation or difficult anatomical conditions, several appointments are necessary to achieve the best possible treatment success.
As with any medical procedure, Endodontics also carries certain risks. These include missing root canals, instrument fractures, or incomplete healing. At our modern dentistry practice, we minimize these risks through precise diagnostics and gentle treatment techniques.
A root canal treatment session in our practice takes around 60 to 90 minutes. It is very important that all root canals are thoroughly cleaned. In more complex cases, further appointments may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
After root canal treatment, you should initially take care of the treated tooth and eat soft foods. Avoid hard or sticky foods until the final filling has been placed. If you experience persistent severe pain or swelling, please contact our practice immediately.
Regular follow-up appointments are important to monitor the healing process. In most cases, a final restoration with a crown is necessary to stabilize the root-treated tooth in the long term.
The cost of root canal treatment varies greatly depending on insurance status and difficulty, ranging from €150 to approximately €1,000.
We will be happy to provide you with a detailed cost estimate and advise you on possible financing options and coverage by your health insurance.
