Fixed braces are particularly suitable for correcting various tooth and jaw misalignments in permanent teeth. One of the most common areas of application is the treatment of pronounced crowding, where the teeth have too little space in the jaw and overlap or displace each other. Fixed braces also offer an effective solution for individual teeth that are rotated or displaced.
In addition, at our practice in Leipzig, we also use fixed braces to treat tooth gaps between the teeth, overbites, underbites, and open bites. The therapy makes it possible to move the teeth precisely into the desired position while optimizing the bite.Whether fixed braces are the right treatment method for you depends on various factors. The type and severity of your malocclusion, your age, and the condition of your teeth are decisive. After a comprehensive diagnosis in our practice, Dr. Niels Hofmann will work with you to create an individual treatment plan. We also take your personal wishes and ideas into account in order to achieve the best possible result.
Fixed braces consist of several precisely coordinated components that work together to move your teeth into the desired position.
Brackets: Brackets are small metal or ceramic plates that we bond to the outside or inside of your teeth. They have special slots in which the archwires are attached. The exact alignment of these slots is crucial, as it determines how your teeth will eventually stand. At our practice, we offer various types of brackets, including aesthetic ceramic brackets that are barely visible on the teeth.
At moderndentistry, we exclusively use innovative and modern IDB ceramic brackets.
Arches: The wire arches connect the individual IDB brackets to each other and transfer the forces necessary for tooth movement. Your teeth follow their course during treatment. Our dentist, Dr. Niels Hofmann, regularly adjusts and tightens the arches during the course of therapy to continuously achieve the desired tooth movement.
Elastic bands: These elastic elements connect the IDB brackets in the upper jaw and Lower Jaw. They serve to stabilize the achieved position and optimize the bite. The elastic bands are an important part of the treatment and contribute significantly to its success. und tragen maßgeblich zum Behandlungserfolg bei.
There is no general answer to the question of when is the right time for orthodontic treatment, as it depends on individual development and the type of malocclusion.
In principle, orthodontic treatment can be useful from around the age of 6 to 8 if the aim is to positively influence the growth of the upper and lower jaw. However, fixed braces are not usually used at this early stage of tooth replacement.
We usually only fit fixed braces in the second phase of tooth replacement, known as the late mixed dentition phase. For most children and adolescents, this phase begins between the ages of 10 and 13, when most of the permanent teeth have already erupted. At this stage, jaw growth is not yet complete, which makes it easier to move the teeth.
Treatment with fixed braces is also possible in adulthood and can lead to excellent results. Our team in Leipzig treats patients of all ages and will be happy to advise you on the options for orthodontic treatment. After a thorough examination, we will work with you to create an individual treatment plan tailored to your personal situation.

Preparation for treatment
Every treatment begins with a comprehensive diagnosis. At our modern dentistry practice in Leipzig, we first analyze the condition of your teeth and jaw in detail. To do this, we use state-of-the-art technology, including a 3D scanner that creates precise digital images of your teeth. These images enable us to create a virtual 3D model and plan your treatment with precision. This means that a conventional impression with impression material is no longer necessary.
Based on this analysis, Dr. Niels Hofmann makes a precise diagnosis and develops an individual treatment plan. This takes into account the type and extent of your malocclusion as well as your personal wishes and needs. In a detailed consultation, we explain all the steps of the planned therapy and draw up a transparent cost plan. This way, you know what to expect from the very beginning.
Carrying out the treatment
Once you have decided on treatment, the fixed braces will be fitted at your next appointment. We will attach the IDB ceramic brackets to your teeth and fit the wire arches and, if necessary, the rubber bands. This process takes about two hours and is usually painless, so no anesthesia is required.
In the first few days after insertion, you may experience some discomfort as your teeth and mouth adjust to the braces. However, these initial discomforts usually subside within a few days. Your everyday life—whether eating, speaking, or participating in sports—will not be significantly affected by the fixed braces.
We will closely monitor you throughout the entire treatment. You should come to our practice for check-ups every four to six weeks. At these appointments, our team will check the progress of your treatment and adjust the arches or bands if necessary.
Follow-up treatment
Once your teeth have been successfully corrected, the treatment is not yet complete. Teeth have a natural tendency to move back to their original position. Follow-up treatment is therefore important to ensure the long-term success of the treatment.
We recommend that you wear a retainer after your fixed braces have been removed. This is a thin wire that is attached to the back of your teeth and stabilizes them in their new position. Alternatively, a removable loose brace can be used, which you initially wear all day and later only at night.
We conduct regular check-ups to ensure that your teeth remain in the desired position. Our tooth dentist, Dr. Niels Hofmann, will advise you in detail on the optimal follow-up treatment and answer all your questions. This ensures that you will enjoy your new smile for a long time to come.

In the first few days after insertion, we recommend that you eat softer foods. Even later on, you should be careful with very hard foods. These include hard bread crusts, apples, carrots, and nuts. It is best to cut these into small pieces. Avoid sticky sweets such as chewy candies or caramel, as these can stick to the braces and damage them. Our team will be happy to give you further tips on proper nutrition during treatment.
The cost of fixed braces cannot be quantified in general terms, as it depends on various factors. The type and severity of your malocclusion and the resulting duration of treatment are decisive. The type of bracket chosen also influences the cost. At our modern dentistry practice, we will provide you with a detailed and transparent cost estimate after the initial examination. This gives you clarity about the expected costs from the outset and allows you to make your decision on a solid basis.
Coverage depends on your age and the severity of the misalignment. Statutory health insurance covers all or part of the costs up to the age of 18, provided there is a medical necessity. From the age of 18, statutory health insurance only covers costs in particularly severe cases that require combined orthodontic and surgical treatment. With private health insurance, it depends on the selected tariff. We recommend that you contact your insurance company before starting treatment to clarify possible cost coverage.
The duration of wear depends on the type and extent of your malocclusion. In principle, the braces should be worn until the desired treatment goal is achieved. For most of our patients in Leipzig, the treatment duration is between 12 and 18 months. In some cases, the therapy may take less or more time. After the initial examination, Dr. Niels Hofmann will inform you about the expected duration of treatment in your individual case. We can closely monitor your progress during regular check-ups.
Thorough oral hygiene is particularly important during treatment with fixed braces. We recommend using an electric toothbrush with a round, medium-hard brush head. This cleans effectively and gently, even in the hard-to-reach areas around the brackets. You should also use interdental brushes to thoroughly clean the brackets and wire arches. At our practice in Leipzig, we will show you in detail how to care for your teeth optimally during treatment. With a little practice, dental care will quickly become routine.
Electric toothbrushes with oscillating-rotating round brush heads are particularly suitable for dental care with fixed braces. These clean thoroughly and also reach the areas around the IDB ceramic brackets. Be sure to choose a medium-hard brush so as not to irritate the gums. Modern electric toothbrushes often have special modes for sensitive teeth or orthodontic treatments. Our team will be happy to advise you on suitable products. It is important that you use the toothbrush regularly and change the brush heads every three months.
The position of your teeth can change over the course of your life—even after successful orthodontic treatment. A stabilization phase is important to maintain the success achieved with the fixed plastic splint. A retainer or loose braces prevent your teeth from moving back into their original misalignment. Stabilization is an essential part of the overall treatment and helps you enjoy your straight smile in the long term. Dr. Niels Hofmann will explain in detail which follow-up treatment is best for you.
