Amalgam restoration refers to the professional removal of amalgam fillings and their replacement with modern, biocompatible filling materials. At our modern dentistry practice in Leipzig, we understand this to mean a comprehensive treatment approach that includes thorough diagnosis, safe removal, and high-quality replacement.
Our dentist, Dr. Niels Hoffmann, first assesses the condition of your amalgam fillings and develops the best treatment strategy. Amalgam is removed under special safety precautions using a Rubber dam, powerful suction systems, and intensive water cooling. After complete removal, the teeth are sealed with high-quality Ceramic inlays or partial ceramic crowns.
The mercury contained in amalgam fillings is continuously released and enters the body via the oral mucosa and respiratory tract. There it is deposited in organs such as the liver, kidneys, and brain and can contribute to various complaints.
At our modern dentistry practice, patients often report improvements in headaches, fatigue, concentration problems, or immune deficiency after amalgam restoration. Modern filling materials also offer aesthetic advantages: they are tooth-colored, have excellent biocompatibility, and can stabilize the tooth substance thanks to their adhesive bonding.

Before any amalgam removal, we carry out a comprehensive diagnosis. Dr. Niels Hoffmann examines the condition of your amalgam fillings and draws up a detailed treatment plan that takes into account medical and aesthetic aspects as well as your personal wishes.
In a detailed consultation, we explain the procedure, possible risks, and various alternatives. Together, we select the optimal replacement material—whether composite, ceramic inlays, or other modern filling materials. If necessary, we also discuss treatment options under sedation.
Amalgam restoration is carried out under the strictest safety precautions. After anesthesia, a rubber dam is placed to isolate the tooth and prevent the swallowing of amalgam particles. The amalgam filling is removed with special instruments under continuous water cooling and suction.
The old filling is carefully removed in larger pieces to minimize mercury release. After thorough cleaning, the tooth is sealed with the selected material. Composite fillings are applied in layers under light curing, while ceramic inlays are inserted in a separate appointment.
After the amalgam has been removed, you can resume your normal activities. If you have been given an anesthetic, you should refrain from eating for two hours. Mild sensitivity in the first few days is normal. Dr. Niels Hoffmann recommends thorough oral hygiene and avoiding hard or sticky foods.
Follow-up appointments check the healing and function of the new fillings. Many patients benefit from accompanying detoxification therapy to mobilize stored mercury. We will be happy to advise you individually on this.

Thanks to state-of-the-art treatment techniques, amalgam removal is very safe. Our special protective measures effectively counteract the possible release of mercury.
Depending on the number and size of your amalgam fillings, we usually schedule 1-3 appointments. Dr. Niels Hoffmann will create an individual treatment plan. Smaller fillings can often be replaced in one session, while larger ones require several appointments.
Exercise is usually possible again after 24 hours. For more extensive procedures, we recommend waiting until the next day and avoiding intense physical activity for the first few days.
