Straight, harmoniously aligned teeth are not only aesthetically pleasing—they also form the basis for your child's healthy development. Misaligned teeth and jaws can be much more than just a cosmetic problem. They can affect your child's chewing function, speech development, and, in the worst case, even their breathing. At moderndentistry in Leipzig, we specialize in pediatric orthodontics and know how important it is to detect and treat misalignments at an early stage. Our dentist, Dr. Niels Hoffmann, has many years of experience in orthodontic treatment for children and adolescents. We use modern, gentle treatment methods that are in line with the latest scientific findings. Plastic splints for children or adolescents are an ideal way to correct misalignments – ideally during a growth phase, when the conditions for lasting treatment success are best.

Choosing the right time plays a decisive role in orthodontics for adolescents and children. We recommend having an initial check-up carried out from around the age of six. You should visit our practice with your child at the latest after the permanent incisors in the Upper Jaw have erupted. This is usually between the ages of 9 and 12. An early diagnosis enables us to determine the optimal time to start treatment. We take into account individual growth patterns and the specific development of your child. The great advantage of early treatment is that we can use the natural growth processes for correction. The duration of treatment is considerably shorter in children than in adults. In addition, many malocclusions are easier to correct when the jawbones are still growing. At moderndentistry in Leipzig, we carry out comprehensive diagnostics to determine whether and when orthodontic treatment is appropriate for your child.
Misaligned teeth and jaws can have a variety of effects on your child's health and well-being. Plastic splints for children are not only for aesthetic purposes, but also have functional significance. Misalignments can lead to uneven pressure, which can damage the teeth in the long term and affect the periodontium and jawbone. The temporomandibular joint and chewing muscles can also be affected. In addition, certain misalignments make oral hygiene considerably more difficult. Hard-to-reach interdental spaces increase the risk of caries and periodontitis. Depending on the type of misalignment, speech development can also be impaired, which affects your child's ability to communicate. The psychological aspect should not be underestimated either: many children and adolescents suffer from their misaligned / crooked teeth and feel uncomfortable. Plastic splints for adolescents can significantly boost self-confidence and contribute to positive personality development. At our practice, we take these concerns seriously and offer sensitive, symptom-based therapy.
At moderndentistry in Leipzig, we focus on modern, aesthetic solutions for pediatric orthodontics. Which plastic splint is the right one for your child depends on various factors—in particular, the type and severity of the misalignment and your child's age. We want to find the optimal solution for every young patient, achieving lasting results in the shortest possible time.
Fixed braces made of IDB ceramic brackets: The modern version of classic brackets is made of tooth-colored or transparent ceramic and is much less noticeable than conventional metal brackets. These braces for children offer the advantage of continuous force application and are particularly suitable for moderate to complex malocclusions. IDB ceramic brackets are robust, durable, and hardly noticeable in everyday life.
Aligners (Invisalign): For teenagers, transparent aligners offer a virtually invisible alternative. The removable aligners allow for flexible treatment without restrictions on eating and on oral hygiene. They are particularly suitable for responsible teenagers who are willing to wear the aligners consistently. At moderndentistry, we provide you with detailed advice on the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems and work with you to find the right solution for your child.
An often overlooked aspect of orthodontics for adolescents and children is the airway. A restricted airway can have serious consequences for your child's growth and development. Symptoms such as snoring, mouth breathing, bedwetting, or difficulty concentrating can be indications of airway problems. Behavioral problems, mood swings, and teeth grinding are also often associated with restricted breathing. Particularly noteworthy: studies show that 25 percent of children with ADHD snore. For many of these children, the symptoms could be significantly improved with the treatment of the airway problems. At our modern dentistry practice, we systematically take the airway into account in our diagnostics. If restricted airways are detected, we can take orthodontic countermeasures to widen the airway. This not only contributes to general health, but also supports your child's normal development.

Preparation for treatment
Orthodontic treatment begins with a comprehensive diagnosis. During your first visit to our modern dentistry practice in Leipzig, we take sufficient time to conduct a thorough examination. Dr. Niels Hoffmann analyzes your child's dental situation in detail and takes detailed images. These include X-rays, photos, and impressions of the teeth. With the help of modern imaging techniques, we can also assess the airway – an important aspect that is often neglected. Based on this diagnosis, we create an individual treatment plan that is tailored precisely to your child's needs. We explain all treatment steps to you transparently and answer all your questions. Before starting treatment, you will receive a detailed treatment and cost plan. It is important to us that you and your child feel well informed and confident before we begin the actual treatment.
Carrying out the treatment
The treatment is carried out according to the selected system. With fixed braces, the IDB brackets are first bonded to the teeth and connected with a wire arch. This exerts gentle, continuous pressure on the teeth and gradually moves them into the desired position. At regular intervals – usually every four to eight weeks – a check-up appointment takes place in our practice. During these appointments, we check the progress of the treatment and make any necessary adjustments. With aligners for teenagers, the aligners are changed approximately every two weeks. Each aligner moves the teeth a little further until the desired result is achieved. Our team is available to answer any questions throughout the entire treatment phase. We attach great importance to good oral hygiene and provide practical tips on how to care for your plastic splint in the best possible way.
Follow-up treatment
Once the active treatment phase is complete, the retention phase begins – a crucial step for long-term success. Teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original position. To prevent this, we create a retainer. This is usually a thin wire that is attached to the back of the front teeth and stabilizes the teeth in their new position. Alternatively, removable retention aligners can also be used. The duration of retention depends on the malocclusion treated, but should be at least as long as the active treatment. At moderndentistry, we continue to support you and your child after treatment with regular check-ups to ensure long-term success. Our goal is for your child to enjoy a beautiful, healthy smile for life.

Various types of misaligned / crooked teeth require orthodontic treatment: crowding, where the teeth have too little space and grow close together or crooked, gaps between teeth, open bite, crossbite, overbite or underbite, and deep bite or deep overbite. Functional problems with chewing, speaking, or breathing can also be indications. Regular check-ups with your family dentist can help detect misalignments at an early stage. As parents, you should also watch out for abnormalities such as mouth breathing or snoring.
The cost of a plastic splint for children varies greatly and depends on the initial situation, the chosen treatment method, and the amount of work required. At modern dentistry, we create a detailed treatment and cost plan before starting treatment. The investment is in the range of $$$. For children under the age of 18 with statutory health insurance, the health insurance company covers a large part of the costs if the severity of the misalignment reaches at least level 3. We provide you with transparent advice on all financial aspects.
Plastic splints for adolescents or children become necessary when misaligned / crooked teeth cause or could cause functional problems. This affects eating, speaking, or breathing. Treatment is also important if the misalignment causes significant psychological stress. As a general rule, the earlier misalignments are detected and treated, the better the chances of success. The optimal treatment time is often during periods of increased growth, typically between the ages of 9 and 14.
For children and adolescents under the age of 18 with statutory health insurance, health insurance covers the costs if the malocclusion is classified as severity 3, 4, or 5. For severity 1 or 2, parents must finance the treatment themselves or pay for it through private supplementary insurance. Private health insurance companies handle cost coverage differently depending on the tariff. At our practice, we can help you with any questions you may have about billing and prepare the necessary documents for your health insurance company.
Treatment with a plastic splint is usually painless. Especially at the beginning and after adjustments to the IDB brackets or the archwire, slight pressure or tension may be felt. These symptoms usually subside on their own after a few days. The use of modern, flexible materials can significantly reduce discomfort. If necessary, soft foods and cool drinks can provide relief. Our team at moderndentistry is always available to answer your questions and provide practical tips for greater comfort during treatment.
